fanfiction. And the question remains: why?

it occured to me last night that by the time I finish OUAN, I'll have spent at least a year on it (I started in Feburary, and I've got maybe a third left to do). This simultaneously encourages me to finish it tout suite, and give up on it altogether. Suddenly gone of fanfiction, kinda. I want to be a writer. If I put the ewffort into the original stuff that I do into fanfiction, I could be a published author by now. But I didn't, i put that effort into fanfiction. And part of me is going 'why?'

I do this occasionally. I spent most of year nine obsesed with buffy, and writng fics (most of which never saw hte light of day, thank god) but that faded. I've spent about a year now writing WK, and while I've still got some plot bunny's left, I'm losing the momentum. possibly due to hte fact that by this point, all plot bunny's are multiparts. I was also going to write a trilogy for hp, but I figure I can tie up most of the plot threads in one fic, if i forget some of the stuff I was gonna do.

meh, i'm going to keep writing fanfiction. I'm just going to make a point of concentrating more on orig fic. I like fanfictionm becaue you can do onehots which are short and sappy, and you don't have to owrry about introducing the characters. I don't like fanfiction when it morphs into novel length monstrosities like DD and OUAN. The stupid thing is, I can't start writing what I want to write as long as I've got those hanging over my head.

...I can't beleive that OUAN is literally going to be novel length (100,000+ words) by hte time I'm done. I've never managed to write that much for anything else.



speaking of 100,000, that's the number of paperclips sold each year. of which only 5% are used for their original purpose. Paperclips have been around for over 100 years.

... where the fuck are all these paperclips going? It's actually quite scary when you think about it. I mean, most people don't even throw them away, unless they've been bending them. Taking into account that sales were probably much ower, there's, no doubt, something like 5,000,000 paperclips on this planet.

anyway, back to fanfiction murble. Mentioned that fic yesterday, with hte whole 'true shippers' thing. Read a bit of fic. This fic won a prize and has been nomiated for several others. And I'm going 'why?' One girl acused it of being formulaic, because hte author implied any female character could have been used. No. It's formulaic because it's D/Hr and hits nearly every cliche for the pairing, and I don't even read many hp fics. D is dared to seduce Hr. They end up falling for each other. It's a hell of a lot better written than most fics for that pairing, but it's still a cliche. And far too much of the author is showing. The idea of quoting the opening of Romeo and Juliet at hte beginning works brilliantly. Referring to the Leonardo DiCaprio film does not. Any bets this girl was a Leo fan? i'm not taking issue with that, i was too, but it bugs me that sh has Hemione liking (and dreaming in terms of) a film the author clearly likes. Possibly it annoys me becaue I've done it myself...
Oh, and hse has Hermione wearing makeup. hough that might just annoy me because I wore mascara a few nights ago and it's still leaving streaks on my glasses, no matter how hard I try to get it off my eyelashes (have I mentioned I love my eyelashes? thank you, deceased father, for leaving me your insany long lashes). but still, Hermione didn't strike me as a character who would wear makeup. A lot of girls don't. Well, not in England.

Okay, I'm going to stop picking this fic to shreds now. It's a good fic. it's well liked. The writing is very pleasent to read. I'm just not a fan of the plot and a few minor points of characterisation, but for what it is, it's been done supremely well. Personally, I'd rather read an original but terribly written fic. Done it in the past.


Someone asked to use my icons. i said yes. Feeling kind of flattered, in a 'why?' way. Apparently 'why?' is my word of the day... I've got to get around to makeing that doormat icon i meant to. And now I want to d an animated GIF about those paperclips. Seriously, it scares me. There's some evil paperclip collector out there, preparing to take over the world with them, i swear.
