Glasgow. Anyone live there or know it? I'm poking places to stay while on a cycling holiday by the canal.

I live nearish and know it well, but I don't know much about places to stay. I could mine the family's knowledge, if you like?

We're eyeing up Mary Hill, or anywhere on the Great Western Road (if this makes no sense, I am mining housemate for place names!), since we're cycling from Edinburgh along the canal, and then going on to Oban and hopping on a ferry to Mull. It's a great idea, apart from neither of us having ever been to Scotland!

Ahhhh, yes. Parts of Maryhill are a wee bit dodgy, but Great Western Road is close and simple to get to from the canal. There are lots of very good hotels and B&Bs on Great Western Road, particularly along towards the Botanic Gardens and Byers Road, getting into the heart of the west end and my favourite part of Glasgow.

I'm not too familiar with the bit in between Edinburgh and Glasgow (I've had my head in a book when on the train!) but the journey up to Oban should be pretty spectacular. I imagine most of the route will be close to the West Highland Line, which is gorgeous, and you go right up the side of Loch Lomond.

I hope the weather holds up for you! We've been swinging between humid 25°C days and gloomy gray 12°C days, though it has stayed mostly dry.

We're planning to go in September, but if it's anything likle the last few years we ought to be in for good weather (well, providing the summer's soppping wet!). I got the impression Maryhill had good bits and bad bits, but it's good to know that the Great Western Road has plenty of accommodation and is easy to get to.
