Films withour music over the end credits = wonderfully creepy.

I have a soft spot for films without soundtracks (just been watching The China Syndrome, if you were wondering). I think they're too much of a default. Some films have brilliant soundtracks (Withnail and I, for example) but it's pretty rare for me to be enamoured enough to even remember a soundtrack, let alone buy it. Too often, especially in horror and thrillers, the attempts to increase tension just telegraph the fact something is going to happen. Some directors maintain suspense regardless, but a lot don't. Ghostwatch, which I will forever harp on about, has no soundtrack, which is what makes it one of the scariest ghost stories televised.

I guess it's a matter of realism. Sometimes realism isn't what a film needs, and sometimes it is. But I wish it seemed like more directors made a conscious choice, rather than assuming there needs to be a soundtrack without considering the power of silence first.

The Day the Earth Caught Fire, if I'm remembering correctly, had no music over the end credits. It's something that suits potentially apocalyptic endings, I guess.
