I'm considering e-publishing for something I'm working on, because it's never going to be long enough for normal print, and as an erotic romance I know there's a huge ebook audience out there. Consideing I haven't actually finished writing it yet, let alone submitted anywhere, I'm being a little preamture and thinking vaguely about pseudonyms. It's dramatically different to anything else I'm writing, and I don't really want certain members of my family to tumble across it!

Really, this is just an excuse to see what people think about pseudonyms. Realism, gender, simularity to real name? What are your thoughts, and if you had to chose a pseudonym, what would it be?

I've actually considered a pseudonym -- well, actually, a guess a more accurate term would be "handle", since it would be for email/LJ -- for the same reasons. I've decided if I ever go through with it, I'd choose a variation on "Wilgefortis", probably "Wilge" or even just "Wil". It's a name I associate with all the stuff I loved about college, and I am used to it since I spent 65 levels on FFXI answering to it. ^^;

I'm in a strange boat with my real name. It's gender neutral, which is pretty awesome, but very unusual. (If you search for my first and last name on Google, there are five or six results. Every one of those is associated with me.) As I've gotten older, I've become aware of the fact that I have to be very careful of what I put my name on. :/

My real name turns up a silent film actress, which is why I prefer to credit RL things with my initials, so people can actually find me. At least I don't need to worry about being googled by prospective employers.

I've used MsSolo, and variants thereof, online since I was 13. Not very useful as a pseudonym though, thanks to the use of a title and the thirteenness of the Solo!

Mine have no similarity to my real name, none of them. One of my old pseuds was Sophy Fletcher - Fletcher was the maiden name of the great-grandmother I was named after - but since then I've been writing under, variously: Derek Des Anges, Del Des Anges, D. Des Anges, Edward Des Anges, and Algia Des Anges. My theory is that I can claim these people are related if necessary, and each name fits a specific *type* of book.

Further to that there're a couple of pro erotica writers on my flist, one of whom uses her nom-de-plume as her LJ name, [livejournal.com profile] annajaneclare. It is not her real name, but it works well for the women's erotica she writes.

Further pseudonyms I have considered, for various genres:

Algernon Waite
Jack Walker
Myra Bell

I really struggle with pseudonyms. Part of me wants something ending in Solo, part of me says it's too teenage MarySue (and considering I came up with MsSolo when I was thirteen, it probably is). I have a terrible urge towards puns, but I don't want something that screams pseudonym.

If I liked my middle name, I might do something with that, but the only Kelly I knew wasn't a nice person!

You could use it as a surname? Mina Kelly has a certain ring to it.

I was just exploring Kelly as a surname. I think that could work.

(expect a mostly pointless post on the subject soon!)

That's fine; if you had replied, I'd probably be blocking on it at the moment!

It's like writer's block lawn tennis! Today, Derek will struggle for words. Tomorrow, it's Nat's turn!

I don't actually have any thoughts on pseudonyms right now, but I have to say I love your icon. Especially "Your stupid? My stupid what?" :)

I've creditted it to the maker on my icons page, so if you want it, gank it. She had a bunch of individual ones (you can search her journal by the tags), but this is them all looped together (brit version!)
