24/12/07 05:41 pmupdate!
i have had an exciting day. my boss came to visit, which was weird. he brought wine, money, chocolates and flowers, covering pretty much all bases. i had an mri, which is both similar and different to a ct scan, and was in a far distant corner of the hospital where the walls were duct taped to the ceiling! i also had a lumbar puncture, which was not as painful as tv has led me to believe, but did take almost an hour because my spine is as elusive as my veins. it confirmed that i have intercranial hypotension (nice and rare!); a normal cerebral spinal fluid pressure is between 12 and 17. guess at mine is?
two!
yee-ah. i have been prescribed 48 hours of bed rest (cunningly coinciding with all the doctors' holidays) and then a bloodpatch, which means another lumbar puncture.
being in hospital is like being in a weird hotel: i have a comfy bed, three meals a day (of distinctly school dinnerish quality) and my own personal tv and internet, but i'm also in a room of up to five people (there's only me and a nnogenarian right now, and its likely to stay that way because the ward is closed due to a bug) and people stick needles in me. oh, and it's also FREE, because this is the nhs, and that makes up for all the duct tape and school dinners and bugs, because if i lived in america i would prolly still be at home right now.
nice lady next to me has gone home, and so have most of the nurses. i dont know what visiting hours will be like tomorrow, what with the bug, but i will be getting a glass of sherry! i have nice flowers, and chocolates, and all the xmas tv one could possibly overindulge on, and family bringing presents, and you know what? i bet i'm having the most /interesting/ xmas of anyone i know!

Date: 24/12/07 06:52 pm (UTC)You sound very chipper all things considered, and like you are getting better.
I was trying to think of something nice I could send you through cyberspace, my best idea was to hope you have not read Cheshire Crossing.
Happy Christmas
