I know there are several people in my FList who are used to dealing with mirgraines; any advice regarding painkillers/food/quantities of water/sleep to make it go away quicker? Any way to tell when it is going away?

Cancelled nurse;s apointment since walking to the surgery is fairly obviously out of the question today, and very not at work. It's Christmas do tomorrow, in the Merchant Adventurer's Hall, and I'd realy love to go, but at this rate it's definitely looking like a no.

Unfortunately (well, highly fortunate for me) I only had pediatric migraines which means A) I don't get them any more, B) was able to sleep through them. Adult migraines don't work the same so you really can't sleep through them. Sorry.

However, there is a technique that many migraine patients use and have reported good results. Describe your migraine. Completely.
Where is the pain? What kind of pain is it? Would you describe the pain as a cloud, more like a spiked ball, a river? Or is it something else?
What color would you describe it as? Do the colors shift, is the color translucent, opaque?
What would your migraine smell like? Would it be a bad smell? Or is it actually a neutral or good smell?
Is your migraine telling you something with where it is? Or the type of pain?

This is just -one- technique. The concept is that you actually pay attention to the pain and sit with it and try to accept it instead of avoid or be afraid of it. The people for whom it works say that by the time they finish trying to describe it, it's gone.

Another thing is conscious muscle relaxation. Starting at your toes, you clench all the muscles in your toes for a few seconds, then release and breathe deeply. Then move up your legs and continue up your body doing this. The reason is because a lot of migraines involve constricted vessels in the brain or neck, and this technique helps dilate them.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I know nothing about migraines, but I have a car. If you want to make another appointment I can drive you to the nearest car park, and walk with you the rest of the way. It would be very little trouble for me and I'm free pretty much all week except wednesday afternoon.

I'm out of phone-credit, so replying here: I have a ref-meeting sometime this evening, but I can be fairly flexible about that, give me a call when you know what kind of time you want to go.

A migraine-specific remedy like Migraleve can be useful, as well as ordinary (strong) painkillers of your usual sort. Drink water, lie in one position in a dark room (I find excessive movement makes the pain sort of roll around in my head and makes me very nauseous). Basically, take some pills, take a drink of water and try to sleep in a ventilated dark room. After a few hours it will hopefully start lifting - if it was a bad one, you may find the next day you feel sort of hung-over without pain (sometimes I feel the next day like I'm in a see-through box and everything is a bit muted).

I take co-codemol and lie on my back in a darkened room, sipping a warm non-milky drink. If sleep is possible, then sleep but if not just keep eyes closed and head not too propped up

For me, the only OTC medication that has ever given me any relief was Excedrin.

Prescription wise, I have a good deal of success with Imitrex and Reglan(Metoclopramide). The Reglan is for nausea since it always accompanies my migraines.

It's not always easy to tell when a migraine will go away since they usually come and go in stages.
When I've went without medication, and the headache part of the migraine was gone, I've gone through 12 to 48 hours of extreme fatigue.

I took Zomig, which was a nasal spray, but that was prescription and fairly expensive. Before that, I took Neurofen Plus. I don't know if they worked on the migrane, but they sent me to sleep. Whenever I had a migrane, I took some then I basically slept for 24 hours and then was fine the next day.

I take Imigran nasal spray, which I get on prescription but can be bought over the counter.
If I don't take that, then the migraine runs its course. Sooner or later I throw up and pass out for four hours, and am fine thereafter.
I find holding an ice-cube against the artery in the temple reduces the pain.
