Once again, I find myself desiring bigger MP3 player. One that'll fit multiple albums on. My little Creative MuVo is faithful and sturdy and has lived through several other players, but it's only 512MB.

In my search (primarily Amazon centred, I must admit), I keep coming across Pocket Techie. Does anyone know anything about this make? Because google's just turning up a lot of stuff that makes me think it's really really new.

Otherwise, I'm eyeing up a Sony drag-and-drop player (since I don't want to have to deal with SonicStage), a few Philips players and a handful of Samsungs. There's no point replacing the MuVo with another Creative (it's the only Creative that hasn't died on me), iPods are out of my price tag and I'm a bit lairy of brands I don't know. Hence the curiousity about Pocket Techie.

Definately avoid SonicStage if possible! I have a Sony 4GB player, and it keeps sending me messages saying I need to convert Connect Player to SonicStage, but the download won't actually work. I have not had fun with Connect Player, and would be happy to upgrade, but it won't let me!

Pocket Techie is, almost certainly, buying in generic white label MP3/4 players from China and bunging their own logo on, the same as EBuyer, Play.com and so on do (only PT will charge a few quid more as they don't have the volume sales). Not that it means they'll be bad players - my £10 ultra-budget player's been virtually indestructable, and it lasts for ages on a single AAA battery.

The only advantage to Sony players are great sound quality and good battery life; if these aren't important to you then avoid them.

The main problem with Sonicstage is not actually that its a piece of shit (which it undoubtedly is), because it can be made to work properly with care, but to get the best out of Walkmen you need to use ATRAC which pretty much shackles you (or at least your music collection) to Sony from then on. In my case I find it worth it, but others may not be so forgiving.

I'm curious about the new drag-and-drop players, but also slightly dubious; I wonder exactly how its going to work.

As a side note, I have a 2GB Sony player with a radio going spare (now I've found a 4GB version). I'd be more than willing to part with that, but it would presents the problem of Sonicstage already outlined...

Drag-and-drop isn't new tech; it's the same system as dragging files on/off a USB stick or a digital camera. I wouldn't use anything else!

I know its not new, I just wonder how Sony will manage to fuck up its implimentation in their players; they have a track record for making a hash of the easy and straight forward.

Sorry - I'm knackered, and should have realised that's what you meant. And yes - I had a Sony player once. Never again.

To be fair that sentence doesn't actually refer to Sony, so I can see why you'd have got the impression you did.

I think I'm about the only person left these days who actually puts up with Sony. I reckon when 200GB players are small enough and cheap I'll rip all my CDs to Wav or something good and lossless, then wave goodbye to walkmens.

my 2gig £19.99 job from Argos made by Aigo has lasted forever and has been drop-kicked from here to kingdom come but you can't flick to songs and it puts them on in alphabetical order.

I've had no problems with Sonic Stage, but that's probably because I know feck all about computers or music, and so the things I apparently should be downloading to use with this, I've never heard of and therefore haven't downloaded to use with it. And without those, I've found it to be really easy to use. Does take up a chunk of memory, though, which can be annoying.

I hope you find a decent one.

BTW, if you're not at work today, fancy coming on a wander around the charity shops this afternoon?

Mike and I are going fruit picking this afternoon, apparently, so I'll have to miss out. You're welcome to come by and see what we end up with, if you want. There should be pie, and hopefully more jam.

That sounds fun :) I think I'll need to come back here and do more work before [livejournal.com profile] enyay's pub do this evening (are you going?). But fruit picking is really tempting, as is watching other people cook!

Where are you headed and what time?

Looks like fruit picking is going to be quite soon (to give more time for making stuff), though breakfast is happening first. We'll be going over to St Nick's Fields, provider of plums and greengages and blackberries and loganberries and...

I'll take my phone, if you want to find us there. I am going to Tom's thing tonight, so I'll see you there if not before.

I should make my 1000 thesis words happen today as soon as possible (I'm 60 words into it so far!), so I think I'll have to miss out on fruit picking. I hope the two of you have a good time, and I'll see you this evening :)
