As people may have gathered, I'm not NaNoing. Instead, I'll be focussing on rewriting Greenhelm. There's a lot that needs to be done to the first half, but hopefully by the time we reach Cour again there'll only need to be minor nudging. I thought I might rewrite a chapter a day, but since that'd probably result in a larger wordcount than NaNo, perhaps not. But if I could get most of it done, that'd be good. It'll be my write-in project, though I discovered earlier that I'm working that day, so won't be there til later.

I keep accidentally introducing new characters: Ethan's girlfriend was planned (though she only got named Heather a fwe minutes ago), but Peceren the under-butler just turned up. I like having a big cast of minor characters. Unfortunately, having planned the plot so many years ago, I can't kill off any major characters, and since there's going to have to be a lot of death later, the more people i can convince readers to attach to who aren't part of the main six would be good. I really want to kill one of the main six off now, but it would rather curtail later books, should I ever wish to write them. If one happens to die anyway, I'll just have to cope, but it'd be a shame (and reduce the number of second gen characters, drastically, alas).

With everyone in different places, I also have to remember to get out of Galahad's head occaionally, too. I don't like third person limited to a single character (as in Harry Potter) because if you don't like that character, it can make even the best book hard to read. So while Galahad gets probably 70% of the perspective, I want Ethan and Ivy and Laina to get a look in, and Elspeth too, later. Ivy's not bad to write, though I struggled a little with Ethan (it all got very tell and not show, and I suspect I'll be rewriting today's stuff at a later date anyway) and I've not tried Laina yet. She's only just appeared.

Since I'm not bringin this to writer's at the mo, and since I know there are non-writer's people (specifically, Merfilly) who are interested in Greenhelm, would people like to see bits of the rewrite posted? If it's filtered to a small number of people, it doesn't count as publishing, right? (and it'll go through, no doubt, another rewrite after this)

So, essentially, who's interested in being on a Greenhelm filter? I'll start posting from the beginning, and I'd like lots of Constructive Criticism. Original_100 fics will remain on general FLocked, but my FList is probably alrge enough to count as too large, in terms of first publication rights.

It occurs to me some people probably don't even know what I mean by Greenhelm, and I understand why you might not read the fic posts when they're referring to something you've not heard of. It's a fantasy novel I'm working on, based around Galahad deGreenhelm, the curse he is under, and the fact the curse wasn't designed to cope with illegitimacy. It's set on a large island, similar to Dark Ages Britain in terms technology and imports (so no silk, or printing, or even much glass because it's hard to make), and pre Roman in terms of flora and fauna (e.g. there's boars, but no rabbits). There is magic (three kinds, but one's illegal), there's dragons and elves and so on (though the dragons live in the mountains, and the other fantasy races were kicked off the island). There's an Empire, coping for the first time with a female ruler, an increasingly complex religion that varies between countries, and it rains a lot. A lot. The first book takes place in autumn and winter. When it's not raining it's misty. Or snowing. There's some sleet, too. I don't think I've written about a sunny day yet.

Some of that probably sounds cheesy and generic. Which, well, it is. But I'm doing my best to reduce the cheese from the worst of it (first Empress, for example. Definitely not so wince worthy compared with my 13 year old version). I'm not trying to rewrite the genre here.

So, anyone interested in being on the filter?

I really have to get aorund to making a Greenhelm icon.

Can I be on the filter? I've missed a lot of Greenhelm, but I love it and I want to catch the re-write.

I'd like to be on the filter but I can't promise much constructive criticism.

I like what I've heard of Greenhelm, so I want to get to read it from the beginning. Good luck with the rewrite!
