28/5/06 11:15 amI loved the beginning. Having heard Ian McKellen's (sp?) views on it, though, part of me kept waiting for them to start holding hands ^_^ They both looked nummy.
There seemed to be fewer geeksquee moments in this one, fewer mutants to spot. I'm not sure if they made some up to suit the plot. Amused that Spike was in it, though, and I think I spotted Sunspot.
Jean's hair really got on my nerves. It looked like a bad dye job, not only entirely unnatural in colour but also in texture. The Pheonix thing... On some levels I prefer the comic's version, but I can understand how that wouldn't work in the films. The same way the Hellfire club are very cool, but a bunch of mutant aristocrats dressed as eighteenth century porn stars? Not so much with the fitting with the other themes. The 'open you eyes' bit came from the comics, which was cool. But no Phoenix shape! All that teasing at the end of the last film, and no firey phoenix.
Also, killing Patrick Stewart half way through? Genius, but a little strange. It was very much the Wolverine show after a certain point. The death toll was pretty high throughout (the X-men have no problem killing people in the films, which bugs me). Some powersquee, though, especially Beast and Iceman. I was thinking, just moments before "They haven't done the ice form thing, have they?". It was cool that they did.
I'm glad the sentinel wasn't actually part of the plot. That was good. Pity they didn' give Kitty and pete more screen time, though the bit where Colossus is carrying the telly amused me. Kitty was a bit 'look how I create tension between Rogue and Bobby' for my liking.
There were a few wobbly bits with the script I noticed, if I saw it again I'd probably notice more. Same with some of the editting, but these aren't the sort of things I pick up on in a first viewing. The plot was good, the characterisation was a bit dodgy, the acting was good, the effects had they're wobbly moments...
Stay after the credits.
(also, The beginning of hte phoenix saga, the end of the original phoenix saga. I don't have time to hunt out the middle (which is brilliant), but if you skim through the phoenix tag on scans_daily long enough you'll be sure to encounter it)
