Spent a large portion of this morning MP3 shopping (again). Currently, my favourite is the Toshiba MEGF10, but for the price I might as well get the Creative Zen 20GB. Except on Amazon, where the Toshiba was going for considerably less. Amazon.com has it for about £107, but won't ship to the UK. Grrr. At this rate I'm going to end up doing what I promised myself I wouldn't, and buy off eBay. The Toshiba will also carry other file types, so I could use it like a USB pen.

Most MP3 players will work as flash drives. The Creative Zen is, afaik, as good as an ipod, whereas a lot of the 3rd party mp3 players basically suck for playback quality, and you've no idea if you're buying online until it arrives.

The Zen is, but it's expensive, and the new Creative models apparently have problems with crashing. Sony's good, but the software's meant to be appalling. Samsung just don't have anything with the capacity I want (8-15 GB). I've never liked iPods, iRiver seems to have far more functions than I could ever justify having (or paying for), and a lot of the other brands I don't know well enough to trust yet. The main thing that impressed me about the Toshiba was the price and the fact that it had entirely positive reviews on amazon, but I guess that means nothing if I can't actually buy one.

The thing about reviews on places like Amazon is that it's only people who feel strongly one way or another that bother giving reviews, as far as I can see. Anyway, all I'm saying is that something cheap probably has a nasty DSP on it that won't do your music any favours.

It's true about the "strongly one way or another", but with the Toshiba it seems people only feel strongly one way. Most of the other review sections hqave a couple of good ones, a few "it would be good if it weren't for..." and several "I can't use mine any more". To be fair, the Toshiba probably does have its fair share of quirks, but at least none of them seem to be making it unuseable for other owners.

Mmm, the Creative Zen 20GB is very tasty. *wants* If you get one I can look at it and pretend I have one too!

BTW, you and Toast wanna come to dressing up and chatting evening at Wetherspoons near Clifford's Tower this evening? We'll be there from 7 :) (actually, the dressing up part isn't necessary, but [livejournal.com profile] rhube and I will be)
