How to prevent rape: Don't rape people - because I think it's very, very true.

Today, I agreed to work lunches on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (and Wednesday, in the respect that I already work all of Wednesday). I'm a little nervous about what I'm letting myself in for, since today was manic. My lunch was cut short, and my supervisor didn't get a bite to eat until 3pm. We sold many houses though, which is good. I can see why the boss wants someone in for lunches, and I am the most flexible in that respect. It's near the end of term, so there's less reading, and if I'm in town regularly I'll be far more likely to get Christmas shopping done. I'll be getting around £85 a week, which isn't half bad! I've told teh boss Tuesdays might not work, because of Latin, but we'll see. It's only for three weeks anyway, since I'm going home on the 22nd.

I can't believe it's the 1st of December tomorrow. Ahh! I really need to get my arse in gear. I haven't decided yet whether I'll get an advent calendar - I did't have one last year, nad I didn't miss it, but it does really help me keep track of the days better. It would just be one more thing to take home though, so perhaps not.

You seem busy, but it's got to be worth it for £85 a week!

I want an advent calendar with Jesus on, but I'm always too late to buy one :(

Thanks for the link, it's the kind of thing that needs to be said.

Very true on the women's front. When will men learn to take responsibility. The attitudes cultivated towards women in this culture makes me sick.

When a police officer came into our all girls' highschool, he said, "I know that men should alter their attitudes, but, come on, if you're wearing a short dress or a skirt, always wear an overcoat." So it's always a girl's responsibility to keep herself safe and not the man to control himself. Yet despite his disclaimer's notice at the beginning, I don't see changes in the way boys are educated about women. It pisses me off! I mean women are villainised by both men and women. When did wearing a mini skirt and makeup ever become a permission slip for a man to brutally rape a woman? GRRRRRRRRR.

I take issue with your rampant and unhelpful feminism. It is true that to lay the blame at the rape victim's feet is entirely wrong: however, it is *incredibly* niave to absolve women of all agency. Yes, rape is terrible and wrong but people still do it - so it is only logical to take precautions to try to avoid it in the first place. Reducing cases of violent or sexual crime requires educating both males and females, not ranting about the fallacy of the phallus or the superiority of either sex. All you Ann Oakleys beware!

I'm afraid I'm going to take issue with the rape thing.

Yes, it is entirely the man's fault if he rapes a woman.
Yes, the world would be so much better if there were no rapists around.
The same could be said of murderers, or muggers, but saying that doesn't make it safer to wonder round the dodgy areas of Manchester, or London, or wherever, late at night waving around expensive watches and flashing wads of cash.

I don't think you are to be blamed in any way if you're raped, however I do think that you should sometimes stop and think about what you're doing. Take the better-lit route home if it's late, that sort of thing. I say this in the same way that I don't go out in certain areas back home, especially not dressed up in full alternative gear, because there is the very real risk I will be attacked. In fact I have been, 3 times, and stones have been thrown at me and my car has been vandalised. In every case the blame rests on the shoulders of the people who attacked me, but if I had taken some precautions and stopped and thought for a minute then it probably wouldn't have happened.

I'm not saying live your life in fear, I'm not saying don't go out, I'm not saying don't get drunk, I'm just saying think a little.
If you do that you cut down on the opportunities for rape, and thus cut down the numbers of rapes committed. And that can only be a good thing.
