minervasoloWhat is with the random outbursts of "Can you feel it?" by the painters. Just that one line. Maybe once every two hours. Is it the signal for a tea break or something? If it is, they took one at about 8:15 this morning. They're doing the kitchen today, so we can't get in to cook, or eat, or get hold of food. Joy.
Loved it in my usual fangirly way. In that way where holes make it even more fun.
Hole one: The date.
It was set a month ago. 3/10/04. If you want to set something rpesent day, do not date it. If you must date it, at least date it so that the date will be after it finishes it's international cinema run. Ideallly, stick it ten years in teh future because it's not goiong to make that much difference.
Hole Two: the cold
Antartica! Antartica. Where it is cold. I do not care if you want to see the actors faces, if you have them uncovered then eyes should be freezing and noses going black and falling off. Not to mention the end wher she was even jacketless. We walked out of hte cinema taking bets on whether she fell down and died before reaching the jeep or died inside it.
Hole Three: The Geography
The temple is directly under the whaling station, 200 somethings (metres? miles?). In the whaling station is a tunnel at a thirty degree angle that leads to the temple. A completely straight tunnel. The whaling station is not that large. The tunnel points away from teh main part of the stations, as far as I could tell.
You see where I'm going with this, right? It causes serious issues towards the end, since blowing up the temple manages to open a crate 'directly under the whaling station', as what they say about their relative positions suggests it ought to, and yet the same blast follows them up the tunnel and through the station.
Hole Four: Your Own Canon
In no other film have the Aliens taken bare hours to gestate. As far as I remember, it's usually days, though it may be the queens take longer. I don't care if it doesn't fit the timeframe of the film, at least provide an explanation. Which leads to...
Hole Five: Exposition and Insanely intelligent characters
Two characters could read a mix of Aztec, Egyption and Mesopotanian characters and translate into fluid English without even pausing. One managed to read a whole ceiling insnaely fast to provide us with plot most people had probably figured out anyway. They also managed to work out the Aztec calender and provide an equivalent date from our calender without any maths whatsoever.
And then that wonderful leap of logic! Lift weapons, walls move. Ten minutes later walls move again. Guy turns round and says "Are yes, they will move every ten minutes, as Aztecs used a" 'system basaed on ten' (word has gone from my head). One, you couldn't work that out from two shifts. For all you know the spaces between them are going to get longer, or shorter, or stop altogether. Two, minutes are not from a base ten system. The amount of 60s involved in time measurement ought to give that away.
I loved it for the holes, you know I did. I also loved it for the "Oh shit" moments, especially the Predator ones. Alien movies have a lot of OhShit moments. However, something they knew when they started them - the Aleins don't look too great. In CGI they just look too fluid, in bodysuits too cumbersome. Keep them out of the film, for the most part, and build suspense. The heads are cool. Use the heads. Use the tails. Just don't have them running about like those lizards that run on water. Not scary. And I've never been that enamoured of the Preadtor look, but the AvP battles were cool. Stuff the humans, have the ETs battle.
Seriously, battles containing OhShit moments? Best bits ever. And plenty of them. If the film had been a bit longer (and the researchers a bit less lazy) then it could have been great, since you could cut out the random exposition and used OhShit moments to fill in the plot.
I am on a huge Crowly/Aziraphale kick right now. It's an issue in it's own way, because I really need to be writing. I have a Secret Santa fic for the end of the month which I haven't even started (and keep forgetting about), I haven't updated OUAN, DD or C&S for far too long and Greenhelm has sunk back into abandonment again. Ooops. Still, getting Authority comics gmailed to me! ^_^ If we get this new site up, I might to a fansite dedicated to the Authority. It's not like I have a lot of stuff to put up, but seeing as most are either out of date, dead or, well, non-existent, I feel I need to add something here.
What I ought to do now, really, is go into town, sort out the aerial and bank, have another look for a royal blue top, buy lunch, and get presents for Miranda and Kate (especially since I'm not here for Kate's bday). Probably won't, though. I'm really leaving it late with the aerial and bank stuff, I know. It's not as though either will sort themselves out of their own. PLus in half an hour I'll be bored stiff and eating cakes for lunch from costcutters. But it's almost two, and with the forty minute walk in, and the forty minute walk out, and the lecture at 4:15... I could do it, but I'm not sure I'm bothered.

almighty_frog. Need to get chocolate for people, and also establish if people like chocolate and would want chocolate for their birthdays. I can eat here and use up some of my food before I come, which'll be useful.
