A question for the masses
14/10/04 04:52 pmYou can tell I'm spending too much time online today. How many posts has it been? Anyway...
So, thoughts here people:
Should I make a journal for Greenhelm for people to read online? It's my ongoing novel, and it's very dear to my heart. As such, it could probably do with some pretty harsh criticism! I don't want to jeopardise any chance it might have of bieng published one day, but while publishing it myself online (which is what I'd effectively be doing) would mean I couoldn't offer first publishing rights, having other people read it and offer opinions would probably help immensely.
The journal would be friends only, and I'd try to set it up with oldest entries first. The novel is classic high fantasy with a bit of tongue in cheek fun poking at the genre. The lead is a young Lord in his late teens who suffers from depresison, though it's hard to tell if it's endogenous or exogenous. There's a megalomaniac long lost twin, a feminist empress trying to change a chauvinist world, a moody jester's son who's secretly in love with his best friend, a perky orphaned sailor's daughter, and a half fairy girl who's a bit of a wuss, really. There's dragons and immortal demons and gods and multiple dimensions and there would have been dwarves and elves, except for a genocidal war.
Basically, if you feel like beta-ing something like that, let me know. If there are multiple people, I'll stick it in a journal. Personally, I think it's a lot better than most of my fanfic stuff, just because it takes everything I've learnt from fanfiction about characterisation, plotting, style and the like. I've got enough plot to last about ten books, so the canon is pretty well established. However, having reread my original attempt (50,000 words before I quit on it) I know damn well that not only does my style need work, so do the characters. Ethan's evolved immensely, and some of the others have taken a few more steps towards having personalities, rather than just peersonality traits. I'd love to know what people think could be done to better these characters even further.
