13 HP recs

You know, I did this just the other day... This will be interrupted sporadically for squealings about my new skirt. It cost the £30, it deserves squeals. It's the most expensive item in my wardrobe, including my winter coat (£14). Skirt!

Ahem. Yes, recs. Not including the ones I did the other day (well, vaguely). Fanart and Fanfics. A lot of the fics are gen because that's what I tend to read. Too much pairing stuff is cliche, though there's some in here. Quite a mix, too.

1 - the fanart at everyflavour. Some would make brilliant illustrations for the books (for example, the one of Hermione punching Draco. Personally, I love the style. Each character is drawn as the artist imagined them from the description, not as they are in films and not always as I imagined them (Hermione threw me at first) but if you can accept that they're brilliant. Also love this one. And I'd rec Trinket, but it doesn't seem to be there. I've never actually read it, you see, but this animated version sold me on it.

2 - the moste lamentable tragedie of prince wyrd and the milkemaide [working title]
by lise and glockgal. It's cute, it's funny, it goes for non-fandom cliche pairings and it expands on secondary characters in a believable way. Nothing is made explicit at the end, it's all just hints and rumours people have heard. You don't even see the final performance, which surprised me and had me looking for a sequel, but you don't need. It's about the work that goes into something, not the results, as the title suggests.

"Yeah, course I did," Dean shifted his weight. "But Blaise didn't want you to help, Effy. He wanted you to perform." He held up the drawing he was still holding, of a curly-haired blond boy in the most exquisite blue notched collar jacket and woolen slim-fit buckle pants.

Justin rubbed his face and stared at the watercolor. "Whoa. Uh. I really can't be that pretty."

3 - Stay by Chad. It's described as sap with Weasley's, and it is sappy, but there's a twist at the end. Several throughout, really. Basically, Oliver stays at the Weasley's every year, and gets to know them all well. The Weasley's themselves are written marvellously. Check out the art page about for an illustration of the degnoming.

He is greeted the same way he had been since the very first time. "You're late," she notes, not turning around. Fred and George are both convinced that their mother not only has eyes in the back of her head, but can also read minds and is, in general, all knowing and all-seeing. Having spent several breaks with the Weasley clan, Oliver is not willing to totally refute such a claim.

4 - Leaving the Rest Unsaid by lise. Post OotP, Ginny finds Remus talking to a ghost only he can see in the attic. It's sad and sweet. You could read it as hints of Remus/Ginny, but only if you wanted to; it's definitely more a friendship in my mind. Both Remus and Ginny are painted perfectly in this.

Back before Ginny was possessed by a wizard of unspeakable evil, she didn't really know how to lie very well. When she did something naughty her mother always knew, could smell it on her clothes like the faint odor of dungbombs. After she was possessed by a wizard of unspeakable evil, Ginny found she could lie. It was possible the two things were not connected at all; twelve is a very important age in a young witch's life, with change happening daily.

5 - Apogee by llamajoy. Sirius/Remus. I just love it for using the word Syzygy, but it does, unforutnately, using the line 'sex brushing greedy sex'. If you don't know the rules of Sardines, they're even explained at the beginning. There's all sorts of underlying things here, like Remus's tendency to translate things into wolf equivalents, which makes me thinks he's nervous and trying to put things in terms he understands, and the idea that perhaps James and Peter know something's going on, perhaps just James does, or perhaps neither do.

Remus shook himself. If I were trying to get under James' skin, he tried to imagine he was Sirius, and think as a sneaky Sirius would think, I would hide in the library, since Madam Pince still hasn't quite forgiven him for the incident with Hogwarts, A History, and the not-quite invisible ink. He came to the base of the tower, looking left and right, considering. And if I were trying to annoy Peter-- I would hide in the dungeons, near the Slytherin commons, of course.

6 - Harry Potter and the Plumbing of Doom by Darth Maligna. It's a spoof of the second movie, and it's funny. There's a bit of author self insertion, as the director, but while it's intrusive it's also funny, so forgiven. No need to summerise further, I think. And illustration can be found here

VERNON: You’re never going back to that freaky school of yours, ever!

HARRY: If I let my hair grow out long enough, eventually Draco will be able to use it to climb up to my window and spirit me away! And knowing my literary hair-growing skills, that should take maybe a week.

7 - Let's have some more fanart, shall we? In a cheating kind of way, I present you with Dorkorific's recs. In particular, I loved: the crossover art by tina ling, lupin and Weasley is out King, (more book illustration type pic) by golden-seven (there's more hp in her gallery, I just picked out a few examples) and this sketch by Saridout since it's exactly how I pictured Draco prior to the films. Really, check out all the links [livejournal.com profile] dorkorific gives, because a lot of the pictures depend on what style appeals to you.

8 - Damning with Faint Praise by V. It's short and cute and Sirius/Remus. Just very very cute.

...Sirius had always had a severe lack of anything resembling shame, but this, well. Remus had been kind of expecting-- no, hoping-- Sirius to show some kind of embarrassment at being caught out doing-- that. Remus knew he'd have been embarrassed in Sirius's situation, but then, as Sirius would probably remind him, Remus had an enormous capacity for feeling embarrassed.

It was one of Remus's less impressive qualities.

9 - Parting by bow. Sad, painful. Post Ootp.

Remus began to regret his invitation, finding that their sort of misery could not brook company. One night when the moon shone bright outside the grimy windows, Remus wanted to damage him, to shake him and hiss words that were untrue: "you selfish little boy, you think you know suffering? How much could you have loved him?" And afterward, there was so much shame.

10 - A Thousand Words by Elynrae. A series of situations that appear one way at first and another later. Threesomes, twincest, slash and het, rated X. Oh, and while you're there read the rest of her stuff, especially How to Disappear Completely. I've mentioned it before, but damn that fic is good.

Snap. Ginny sitting by herself at the Gryffindor table, half concentrating on her porridge and half looking towards the Slytherin table. Her face twists in an unreadable expression. The other Gryffindors don't sit near her now. They can be seen at the other end of the Gryffindor table, glancing at her and whispering to each other. Ginny is alone but she doesn't mind. Her eyes are locked on the Slytherins, even as she spoons porridge into her mouth. The strawberry jam swirled into the porridge matches her lips, her hair, her tie. But not her skin. This Ginny never blushes.

11 - The Chamber of Keys also has some great fanart, including The Casting Comic and some pretty MMWP stuff

12 - Lies By Teague. It never occured to me that Percy was around for the first war, but he was, and he was a kid. Fics like this go a long way to explaining his behavious in OotP. You can hear the youth in hte flashback, in the simple style. It works perfectly. I also love Cinder-Percy, which has a wonderful wry sense of humour to it. But teh following quote's from Lies.

Percy heard the noise first, as he sat at the table looking at a book. It was dark, and Percy perked up, wondering if it might be Dad. He hadn't come to see the new baby yet, and Mum said he'd be coming any day now.

The muffled thud that followed made his mother pale. "Percy, take the twins to the safe room," she whispered.

Percy was surprised. They practiced their safety drill every morning after breakfast. She had never told them to practice after dinner before.

13 - Stockholm Syndrome by Samcanuck. This won the Dramione side of teh DHR Vlaentine fic exchange, though there only appear to have been four fics for it there anyway. Still, it's very good. After the books, Draco has been caught by the aurors and it's up to Hermione to interrogate him.

[Hermione has spelled Draco's eyes open to interrogate him]

...With that, she swiftly turned and strode to the door. Her hand was on the knob when she turned. "Finite Incantatum."

As she left the room, Draco blinked and realised that there tears on his cheeks from his burning eyes. Somewhere inside, this made him feel indescribably sad.

And special mention of the shoebox project because what hp rec list would be complete without it?

You know it's almost two and I haven't even had breakfast, let alone lunch. I meant to go out and stuff, and I've spent all morning reading HP and looking at pretty pictures. And now it's clouded over. And is raining. I hope it brightens up again soon, because I swear I can not spend all day inside. New skirt!

And it's brightened up again ^_^

Skirt!

Ahhh, £30 was the most expensive thing in my wardrobe until I had to buy a balldress (£90!) for the end of 6th form ball. It ruined my record!

(And thanks for the rec. :D)

We missed out on the 6th form ball. There was boat party, but it took about 400 people and there were roughly 1000 in our year (some one correct me if I'm wrong anywhere here), it set off and returned from Kingston, which is over an hours drive away, and returned after the trains had left. A taxi cost over £100.

Not a lot of people went, really. Wonder why... ^_^

Egads, your 6th form sounds massive! Mine was maybe 300, upper and lower sixth combined. I think I'd have been a bit intimidated somewhere that big.

I didn't even bother learn the names of everyone in my classes. It didn't feel that big... might be because it wasn't, physically. You only got a sense of how many students there were when it rained and everyone packed into a canteen designed for maybe 500 people max. It was too small for the total number of students, but it was very rare to have all students in at once. Some lucky people (pointed glances at mates) even had entire days off from free periods.

Wow... A whole bunch of fanfics to go through and read and enjoy!! *is happy*

My most expensive thing is worth.. umm.. 100 euros. Silk scarf, to go along with the dress I wore for my sister's uni graduation. Irresistable and green and blue and scrunched type of style. Do not know equivalent in pounds... ^^;;

I ought to, having just been on holiday (and having left 20 euros at home because I'd forgotten I had them left from a previous trip). Lesse... 80pence to the Euro (or was that 80 cents to the pound?) means it's £80. The advantage of a pretty scarf thing is you can wear it multiple times, unlike a prom dress or the like, which tends to get worn only once or twice.

(why does livejournal hate poound signs? It's refusing to post anything with them in from the email reply box. I swear it only started doing this today...)
