My sister has a friend who recently turned sixten. Yesterday she told my sister that she was going to run away from home with a guy she met online.

Hands up who thinks that is a smart idea.

Thought so. But the idiocy continues to spread.

So, my sister tells her headteacher. Despite the fact that the girl's mother works just down the road, and would have come and picked her up immediately, the teacher rings a social worker and tells her to take the girl to her uncle's house until her father got home.

Fair enough, but wouldn't most people at least attempt to get hold of the parents first? I assume he called the father, who worked fiar distance away, but wouldn't you call both parents if they didn't work together?

Yep, again not the brightest idea. My sister wants to move for him being fired on the grounds that he's unfit to teach. This isn't the first time he's said/done something that a teacher really shouldn't say/do.

Anyway, this is the bit with the real stupidity. The social worker takes the girl to a train station. Girl presumably suggested something like 'I'll walk from here'. Social worker lets girl get out and go to station.

Bangs head against wall. Idiot idiot idiot social worker.

Girl meets man at station, they get on train together and they're gone.

Because she's sixteen the police can't officially start a search. They're trying to work out how long she's been tlaking to this guy, because it certainly started long before she turned sixteen.

So, if anyone sees a girl who looks about sixteen, with ginger curly hair, a bit chubby, and who is prone to BO (you can guess what kind of relationship she and my sister had, can't you?) with a man of about 22, it could be her. Her name is Sarah. I have no idea what you would do if it was her, but it's worth keeping an eye out, just in case. The police have spokento hte guy on his mobile a few times, but they can't get through on hers, the call are being diverted.

I can see why she'd want to run away, in some respects. She was petty much universally disliked at shool, and I don't know about her homelife but i don't think she was particularly happy there either. still, after everything you hear about the internet, I honestly didn't think there wree any teenagers left who were that stupid. I suppose it's like those young girls who want to get pregnant becuase they want something that will always love them, and manage to completely overlook the fact that babies don't ove you, you have to love them constantly and feed them and clean them and there isn't an off switch for when you want to take a bath or a nap or go shopping.

It's like the Darwin Awards, I s'pose.

GAH. Yes, it is exactly like the Darwin Awards and that's pretty much what everyone staffing my old school did. Substitute "Online" for "hanging out on street corners" and you have my schoolmates. We had no internet, for it were the nineties.

What's ridiculous is this guy had already tried flirting with her older sister, and almost convinced her to meet him. Everyone who Sarah told about this told her she was being an idiot, but she refused to believe them.

Gah. Perfect word. Gah.

The police have managed to talk to her on the phone, but she's adamant that she's perfectly happy and absolutely fine. The police have also established that the guy gave her a false name and address, and she's officially a missing person now. Sarah used to be deaf, so she's got poor communication skills and she has issues with believing what other people tell her, because she got used to making things up for herself when she was younger.

Again: Gah.

Social workers are dumb as pig shit. Did I ever tell you about the time they decided to investigate us because somebody had called them up saying they heard me crying outside to be let back in? Of course, because they are social workers, they completely overlooked the fact that WE WERE ALL IN SCOTLAND AT THE TIME! And could prove it. But no, still the investigation. >.<

Social workers have their heads stuffed up their arses. Some teachers do too.

::sigh:: She's probably nowhere around here any more, but we should keep an eye out for her anyway.

she _was_ still in touch with chloe and her mates, but then one of them told her that they were the ones who had told hte head teacher, so she's not going to speak to them any more because she thought they were the only ones she could trust with her secret.

Oh, lovely. Which idiot told her that? It might sound harsh, but if they'd lied to her for a bit longer they might have been able to arrange to meet her and this guy she's gone off with, then have the police pounce on them. >.<

thing is, at sixteen, as long as she insists she's fine there's nothing she can do. despite her being officially a missing person. The most they cn go after her for right now is truancy.

Thank god for strict truancy laws, eh?
