minervasoloThere is some really appalling fanfiction out there.
I was playing with an idea last night for a new page on my site. basically, a guide for new authors, or people new to the fandom. Things like the meaning of 'lemon' and stuff, and a guide to the ratings. The sort of things very few people take time to explain but everyone seems to know. Also, possibly, a hints for new writers, things like spellchecking (which I almost never do!) and formatting, and things which often put readers off, like Japanese in an English fic or inserting yourself as a character or Mary-sue. I'll read just about anything, and I have found some good fics with author insertions in, but they would have been great fics if they'd just used one of the characters. in general it's like a lighthouse when an author mentions 'a female assassin' or 'so-and-so's girlfriend' in a summary because nine times out of ten it's them. Pet peeve, really, but I've noticed fics like that get considerably less reviews and hits.
So, yes, having just found some really really dire fics, i feel it's rapidily becoming my duty to do this, even if it is incredibly pretentious and arrogant. The worst thing is when you can see an author has talent, either as a story teller or creatively, and they're wasting it.
Trying to work out frames. Anria sent me to nice site with wonderful explanations, but it all seems a bit out of my league. My general idea: outside with columns and links between pages, inside with pages. Not multiple frames. My grasp of html just about enables me to use italics and post urls. Anything more and I go running to her for help. Which she very kindly does, most often ^_^
Thinking of fics again: I probably should have known better than to look at a fic named 'the best fic you'll ever read'. The author hadn't even managed to get the damn chapters in order.
