Suddenly scared of going to Uni. Had mad panic earlier. I am suddenly very keen on taking a gap year.

College isn't being helpful about Oxbridge applications. Apprantly you need a particular form to apply, and for some subject you need to send in an essay as well. How did I find this out? From someone who went to all the open days and found it out. Not from college. College is supposed to help us write our Personal Statements. Oh, they say, we have months next term to do that. Unless, of course you're aplying to oxbridge or a vet or medical course. Then you'll just have to send in your first draft. Hello? People who need most help, being overlooked here.

Plus, i hve no hobbies to put on form. I'm hoping 5 A levels good, but need hobbies. Need interview technique. Need all kinds of stuff, but I've got nothing. Going to talk to people about sorting out college magzine. Can't put anything about teachers in, or criticise colelge (for a student magazine, that's pretty far removed from freedom of speech). but last year's team brought out all of two isues and Roz can do a cartoon strip, and I'm sure I can find people to write articles, nad that would be something right?

If I take a year out, and apparently we're the last year that can, I could go and visit my cousins in Australia. I could get a book published. I culd get a job. I could start an internet business (don't know what, but I'd love to do it anyway). instead, hassle hassle hassle coz I have about 2 months to get this stupid form in, I know nothing about what has to be on it and the day it's due in I have a hospital appointment.

Stress! Panic! Argh!

Been writing more origfic. might start putting some on internet. i'm saying in my personal statement that I've built a website dedicated to my origfic. Okay... Two fanfic websites so far, no origfic. SO have to write some short stories and stuff i never expect to publish properly, but are good enough to show off to uni tutors. Right. Will do.

Off to read Gaurdian uni guide and prospectuses again. Damn mother for bugging me about getting ready to apply all the time. Now look what she's gone and done: she's created a monster! Mwahahaha!

Okay. Right. Enough. calm. Yes. no less annoyed at being bugged into htis state, but not unusal for me. My sister is home, supposedly to catchup on homework (she's had so much time recently, but no, she has to take a day off to do it). oh, plus she's got tonsilitus and her tonsils are now touching. But she's taken my ficwriting computer, so i'm stuck trying to get discs out of the comp in my room with tweazers again. Mst get that drive fixed!

Calm down. You do have hobbies which you can mention - if you apply for English, mention you write fiction. If you apply for anything to do with IT, mention you've become interested in building websites. Mention you've started kung fu. Don't make a big deal out of all of it, but don't just dismiss the things you like doing.

As for the personal statement - you have two months to write it. If you want, send it to me and I'll try to slip into the head of an admissions tutor for you. Can't be that much harder than beta-ing. ^_^

You will get in wherever the hell you apply. I have no doubt about that. Calm down, you have nothing to worry about.

I did Kung Fu once. Not really a hobby. In general, I'm working on the assumption that it doesn't care how far back you go - I quit drama in yr 9, but I'm utting that on, and I quit pottery 2 years ago, but that's gonnna be on htere too!

Thanks for the offer to beta - that's oddly reassuring. ^_^

Oddly?!?!

Actually, I really don't think it's a good idea for you to be putting in old interests - think about it, if they ask you about you doing drama, it'll probably be along the lines of "what sort of production have you been in recently", and even with pottery they're going to want the recent stuff. The admissions tutors are looking at the person who will enter their university, not whoever they were five years ago. Even if you've only just started kung fu, it makes a hell of a lot more sense to mention that than drama or pottery, because there's very little chance you're going to suddenly take those two up again but there's a greater possibility that you'll continue kung fu.

Chances of me doing Kung Fu ever again: nil. I really enjoyed it, but it's a long way away and if I do 5alevels will I really have time?

Things I have done in hte past year:

...

...

Gone to gym occasionally.
Gone to Kung Fu once
Went to one meting of the student magazine

I sued to actually do stuff, but no more. And There's more chacne of me taking up pottery than most other things: I've taken it up twice now, once at 4 and once at 14.
