Seriously, do it. Especially if you've ever posted anything political on your journal.
That, in connection with the program I just watched about American politics and the Jihad in hte decades prior to 9/11 (a lot of the American stuff was far more worrying, since the Jihad was using it's own logic to kills it's members) really does make me worry about the whole American political system.
That said, I'm getting on very well with Mike, our Chicago transfer, and I'm very tempted to spend next year at an American Uni. I didn't do the gap year thing, and a bit of exposure to other cultures will do me good. And yes, I do consider America another culture. At some point I've got to find out how old Mike is.
I'm meant to be doing my reading for tomorrow, but I figure since half the essays aren't in the book, and the other half aren't in the book that it can wait. Seriously, reading prior to the seminar? We're receving several essays toread, presumably, during the seminar, and those that we're meant to be reading from teh book aren't in the book. Time to update the seminar notes, possibly?
Kind of accidentally went shopping today. Got train tickets (finally, woo!) and then thought 'I wanted a long black skirt, because I'm a sheep and other people have them' and then 'hey, New Look. They're cheap', because really that's all I require of clothes. They don't have to be cool, or stylish, or even fit, they just have to be cheap. And now I have a long black skirt, which looks good on me (very odd), and a long sequinned brown top, because it was two for the price of one and it looks alright, though I'll be too cold to wear it until next summer. Didn't get the aerial sorted out, or buy a mouse. I need a mouse for this computer, soon.
Since I'm doing the day backwards, I did finish my essay this morning. Irritated with myself, because I could have started and finished the whole thing in two hours had I set my mind to it, but I let it drag out. Told myself today I wouldn't get lunch til I was done. Didn't get lunch until 2:30. ^_^ Couldn't remember where to hand it in to, so I emailed it (she said we could) and I'm taking a copy along tomorrw because I know Works Word Processor doesn't get along with itself, let alone other word processors. I closed the thing and opened it again, and it had killed my bullet points, formatting and page footers. Gee, thanks. But it's all over and done with now, and i helped Rachel print off hers, which had a 500 words smaller word limmit on it :(
Dull day. Busy days tomorrow and Friday, and then more shopping! only, practical shopping. Definitely practical. Aerial and mouse. I need no more clothes. Oh, and in theory food, but I think I've managed to get enough to last me until at least next Wednesday. Though I need apples and milk again. Sainsbury's are going to think I'm made next time I go in there, buying 20 apples. For one week. I shall be apple girl.

You'd be very right to say that America is a whole different culture, several actually. Take a look at The Great Divide: Retro vs. Metro America, by John Sperling (http://www.retrovsmetro.org/) if you have a chance.

Date: 28/10/04 10:50 am (UTC)Even if it didn't happen (considering it follows rather closely on the tail of a similar tale), it still acts as a warning of what could. This is the way it works, and while it might not be the way it ought to work, it's how it does for now. If you want it changed, you've got to go about changing it yourself.
