24/10/04 02:48 pmThis whole essay writing thing really isn't happening any time soon. Picked a poem last night: The Ruined Maid by Thomas Hardy, since I jut finished Tess of the D'Urbervilles and they tie together quite nicely. I now have a whole page of notes, and I even went to the library. We have to have other people's opinions too, though I hope she's not expecting me to quote word for word, since I was lucky to find a single sentece about the poem in any of the books I tried, and I did try the majority of the Hardy criticism shelf. I've now got a few websites as well.
But actually writing the damn thing? I know perfectly well if I don't to it today I'll be doing it on wednesday. I might start it tomorrow, I don't know, but I'm sure I won't finish it til wednesday. The deadline is 4PM on wednesday, so I'll be emailing it.
So really, I ought to be starting now. It's this 'first paragraph' problem I always have. I just hope she's not the type to expect "I chose this poem because..." since I've always been taught that was a terrible way to being an essay. Ideally, you shouldn't use 'I' at all, the same way you wouldn't when writing up a method from a science experiment.
I'll write a bit. I have to, I really do. ... in a second.
Wandered down to the Sci Fi convention, which was full of gamers. Since I wasn't wearing black leather the guys sitting near the entrance all assumed I was some lost non-sf person, and tried to convince me to stay. Eventually I used essay excuse to escape, though I did stay and chat for a bit. Lots of people from the writing group there. On the way back I ran into Jon (John?) who i met at sf and f, and had a really long conversation about all sorts of things while on the bridge, and then we went on a coffee hunt. The two places that especially do coffee, Freshers and BHenry's, were both (a) a long way from where we were and (b) closed, which meant after checking both we ended up in my kitchen. He's very nice - teaching student having done four years of Physics at Warwick. So that was my morning when I wasn't doing essay stuff. Getting to know people ^_^
