13/4/03 10:58 amSister had multiple friends staying over last night. Hiding from them. Went to see a film last night, wanted ot see Johnny English but booked out, so saw Shanghai Knights instead. Bloody funny.
Normally, I can't stand comedies. I don't like farce, gross-out or slapstick, and most comedy makes me cringe. Witty is fine. Witty I like. Most comedies rarely rely on htat alone, so generally, if you want me to watch a comedy, you either have to take me to hte cinema or make me feel obliged to watch it, like at one AM with a friend. So, cinema last night.
And it was worth it. Only one bit really made me cringe, at the party, but the rest was genuinely funny. The English really do make the best bad guys, and the avoids any racial problems. There were a lot of film skits, most of which I missed (singing in the rain and James Bond were hard not to), but the detail made me smile. Jack the Ripper disapearing, crimes unsolved. Arthur Conan Doyle. The Queen's guards in kilts. Spotted Dick. Got to love a film with gentl fun-poking at British food. Spotted Dick and Haggis.
Sorry, digression: Aww! Really sweet FF.N reviews of two pretty dire fics I wrote. Both OOC and alarmingly random (leprechaun? WTF? How did she get in there?), but really sweet people are saying really sweet things. ^_^
Anyway, yes, Shanghai Knights. Being a Jackei Chan film, there are, of course, outtakes. Personally, I feel it's worth seeing just to here JC say 'my arse is on fire'. Oh, and the sword fighting is amazing, though you don't realise just how much so until you see how badly they buggered it up from time to time.
Dare I rate it? Yeah. 7 out of 10. No X2 advert though, which was very disappointing. I am tempted to buy the X1.5 DVD just to watch the advert. Am going to slink away into a corner with my comics and my geeky shame...
